Michael and his brother Patrick were born in Kilkenny, Ireland, but Patrick was rejected on grounds of being over the age restriction. He declared as NOK, his sister Margaret Croft which was also how Michael listed his own NOK-Mrs M Croft, Erskineville, New South Wales. Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A30 Borda on 17 July 1918-he was 38.
Returned to Australia 2 January 1919.

Patrick did not serve overseas but is nevertheless honoured with Michael and Lawrence on the Kilkenny, MacDonagh Station World War I Memorial under the surname of de Loughry, which is actually quite a common spelling in the UK and Ireland,
