Stephen John Leith Mais was born in Melbourne in 1898. He had previous service with UT86th. Stephen enlisted on the 18.1.16 in Perth, given Service number 5459 (originally 409) and appointed a Private with the 14/28th Infantry Battalion reinforcements. He was aged 18 years, a carpenter and Presbyterian. His father was Stephen Brodie Mais, his mother Mary J B Mais and they lived in Hampton Rd, Beaconsfield. He had served an apprenticeship in Fremantle with EJ Powell, a butcher. Stephen was described as being 5 feet 8¼ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 33 – 35 inches, dark complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. On the 28.1.16, he was appointed to B Company of the 44th Battalion. Stephen embarked in Fremantle on the 9.8.16 on HMAT Miltiades A28. He proceeded to France on the16.11.16. On the 14.4.17 he was admitted to hospital with a fever and diagnosed with influenza. On the 20.1.17 he transferred to the 28th Battalion. On the 25.8.17 he was admitted to Permanent Base. On 23.12.17 he was examined by a medical board for an ear specialist report, then transferred to England.
He returned to Australia on the 20.2.18 on the Llanstephan Castle and disembarked on the 8.4.18. His medical discharge on the 29.5.18 noted he had deficient hearing.
He married Mary Brady in 1927 in East Fremantle. In 1937, Stephen John Mais was a carpenter in Fremantle and employed to board up the holds of a ship for bulk wheat. He had been called as a witness in the inquest of a man who had fallen into the hold of the ship. James Archibald Heron was working as a shipwright and was also called as a witness. Stephen died on the 5.10.1960 in Fremantle, aged 62 and was cremated at Fremantle Cemetery, and his ashes placed in the family grave, Presbyterian section Mon EE 0569.
