Tom was the seventh of nine children of John Stack (born 1838 in Ireland) and Hannah Roche (born 1839 in Ireland). John - a Labourer - married Hannah in Sydney, NSW in 1866, and they moved to Grafton NSW in 1868. The family then moved to Casino, NSW where John was killed when he fractured his skull in a fall from his horse. In 1904 Hannah committed suicide at Casino, NSW.

Tom served in the NSW Police Force as a Probationary Constable (Badge No:7986) and moved to Western Australia following his resignation in 1903. He worked as a Timber Hewer in Manjimup, WA before enlisting in the AIF in May 1915. Tom served with 32nd Infantry Battalion and 8th Light Trench Mortar Brigade as Corporal and Sergeant (Service No:868) and was WiA at Fromelles in July 1916. Tom was Discharged in Perth, WA in January 1918. In his Attestation Papers, Tom stated that he had served in South Africa with 5th QLD Imperial Bushmen, Brother Patrick Stack (Private, Service No:1730) also served in WWI.

Tom returned to Western Australia and was a Farmer at Harvey before moving to Waroona, where he died in 1939.
