Arthur Yates served at Gallipoli from the end of August 1915 until the evacuation. He was promoted to Sergeant during February 1916 in Egypt and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant only a few days before he was mortally wounded at Pozieres Ridge on the 5 August 1916. A bombing officer, he suffered a shrapnel wound to his chest and passed away in the 44th Casualty Clearing Station a few days later. His older brother 781 Cpl. Harold Stanley Yates, also of the 21st Battalion AIF had been killed in action at the same place only a few days before on 31 July, 1916. Two other brothers from the Ballarat family also served.
