Charles Selby SMETZER was born in Clapham in London on 5th April, 1878

His parents were Joseph Selby SMETZER & Marian PLUNKETT who married in 1870 in St George Hanover Square in England.

He married Gwendoline Olive Mary NUTTALL in London in 1908 - 4 known children Charles Anthony, Laurence Valentine, Thomas Joseph & Leonard Selby - Leonard was born in England and the other three children were born in Queensland

He had previously served in the Boer War as a Trooper with the Imperial Yeomary & 5 years as a Sergeant in the 5th African Constabulary before enlisting in Brisbane in Queensland with the 5th Light Horse Regiment on 29th December, 1915 to serve in WW1
