Steve Edward Robert Delchau used his second name and was known as Edward. He attended the Oakbank School and upon completing his education worked as a labourer until he enlisted in the army. Edward left Australia on the Borda on 11 January 1916. On 10 August 1916 while serving in the 16th Battalion, he was wounded at Telelkebi in Egypt and transferred to the East Leeds War Hospital for treatment. It was there that while convalescing he met and married Winifred Irene Kathleen Fry at Wareham, Dorset. Edward transferred to the 62nd Battalion on 14 July 1917.
