Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Frank Mason (Service No:975) enlisted in the AIF on 30 September 1915 and served with 1st Remount Unit in Egypt. Private Mason was Discharged as Medically Unfit (acute rheumatism) on 22 February 1917.

Frank Ernest Hamblin Mason was born in 1872 in Canning WA, youngest child of Benjamin (Ben) Mason (b1828 in Devon, England) and Eliza Ellen Hamblin (b1828 in Berkshire, England). Ben arrived in King George Sound in 1837 on board the Isabella with his parents and siblings - his father was Colour Sergeant with 63rd Regiment. Eliza arrived in the Swan River Colony in 1848 on board the Ranee and was working as a Mistress at Perth Girls' School when she and Ben married in 1852. The couple lived in Perth where Ben was a General Dealer and Hardware Merchant, and Perth Councillor (1859 to 1866). Ben had started work as a Carpenter's Apprentice, and is recognised as a pioneer of the WA timber industry, opening Timber Mills and exporting timber overseas from his Canning Mill. Ben later was a Civil Servant with the Public Works Department.

Frank was a Farmer (orchard and dairy) at Cannington, and also worked as a Contractor (doing ploughing, carting, fencing and pruning in the district). He was a Councillor on the Canning Roads Board and Queens Park Municipal Council, and a member of the Canning Agricultural Society and the Canning Turf Club (in 1892, his horse 'Sooner' raced in the Maiden Plate). In 1894 in Canning, Frank married Lucy Waldron (b1879 in New Zealand), and the couple settled in Canning where they raised their family and Frank worked as a Farmer and Contractor. Following his Discharge, Frank also worked for Boans and for the Post Master General's Department in the Mail Room and as a Cleaner. Lucy died in 1942 and Frank in 1954.
