His brother 4270 Pte Roderick McAulay also of the 54th Battalion AIF was also killed in action 20 July 1916. Both were apparently in the Lewis Gun section of the 54th Battalion.
Hector left for overseas with the 1st Battalion but transferred to the 54th Battalion in early 1916. They were sent to France and arrived there only 3 weeks before the attack at Fromelles.
Hector was posted missing, 19/20 July 1916. A Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced his fate as 'Killed in Action, 19/20 July 1916'.
