Fredeick McDonald was a native of Bankstown and died on his way home, having been invalided home through illness from Egypt. He enlsted in September 1915 putting his age back by ten years in his Attestation Papers.
He was attached to Remount Unit, and sailed from Sydney in November, 1915. However, from the time of his arrival in Egypt he suffered serious health issues resulting in his return to Australia from Suez on 24 June 1916 in HT 'Port Sydney'. Twelve days into the voyage, on the night of 6 July 1916 he disappeared. The circumstances of his disappearnce from HT 'Port Sydney' were invistigated by a Court of Inquiry and it was determined that his death was due to drowning.
He left a wife, Elizabeth [nee Woodward] (1876-1969) and three children - James (1896-1994), Frederick (1899-1987) and Amy (1909-2002). He was employed by Bankstown Council for many years.
