Mr Henne

Fred Henne was a valued employee of the Pleasance Pharmacy 275 Chapel St Prahran. I have a photo of him in the shop pre WW1. He is mentioned many times in my great Uncles letters home to his family. Here is one excerpt from a letter written home when Harold learns of Freds enlistment.

Dear Mother,

Another packet of mail came again for me bringing your news up to the 20th Feb and the news contained in Dad's letter is news I have never been wanting to hear and that is about Mr. Henne's enlistment. I think Mr. Henne's position has been one of the most difficult to solve as he has been torn between duty to his home and Father and that of the call to the colors. I admire Mr. Henne and I am very thankful to him the way he has stuck to Father & Hay and I feel as you do that nothing should now be put in his way to stop him going. Mr. Henne was always a man to worry and it only proves what he has been going through the fact of him losing 1½ stones. The loss will be terrible to Dad & Hay and even when you had the assistance of Henne you two must have been working at full pressure point, but I am going to look at it in this light that believing your extra work has given one more man for our country; you will be able to do things which when looking back on seem to be the impossible, and in the same way similar things are done in France. Please congratulate Mr Henne for me and thank him for his valuable work in the shop and also wish him the very very best of luck and a safe return.
