William left Adelaide on HMAT A 61 Kanowna on 23 June 1915 bound for Gallipoli where he fought until the evacuation. He then served in Egypt prior to transferring from the 10th Battalion to the 50th and being sent to France on 12 March 1916. William was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal on 5 April and made Corporal on 10 October. Initially reported as missing on 2 April 1917, it was later confirmed that he had been wounded and taken prisoner of war at Noreiul by the Germans. William was interred at Gefangenenlager, Limburg in Germany.
In a Red Cross file H.J. Frankiln of the 50th Battalion stated on 7 June 1917, “I saw all the above men Cpl W.K. Tamblyn, Cpl H.A. Haythorne, Lt M.Gore and H.L. Bowen being taken prisoners by the Germans. We could see them being marched off during the stunt at Bapaume on April 2nd 1917.” At the war’s end William was repatriated from Germany to Ripon, England on 23 November 1918 and returned home to Australia on the Nevasa on 25 June 1919.
