Lance Corporal Arthur Ernest Fergusson

L/Cpl Arthur Ernest Fergusson MM 1896 - 23/08/1918
He was born, Balmain, Sydney, educated at Birchgrove Public School, Balmain, NSW
An apprentice coach painter.
Arhur enlisted 26/09/1915, was placed with the 14th reinforcement for the 2nd Bn., he embarked Sydney on the 15/01/1916 for France.
He was employed as a Coy Signaler with Bravo Coy HQ and received the Military Medal for acts of great energy and courage under heavy constant shelling on Company positions East of Ypres between the 30/09 and the 04/10/1917.
Arthur was Killed in Action around midday on the 23/08/1918, on the outskirts of St Martins wood near Proyart, France, while in a dugout used for the CHQ with three other diggers, PTE's, Randell, Upton and Hopwood. All died as a result of a close HE shell burst.
All the boys rest close to each other in Heath cemetery.
Arthur's cousin, 1910 CPL Albert Fergusson, 53rd Bn AIF died of wounds on the 02/10/1918, he rests in Doingt Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
