Joan was born in Adelaide and upon leaving school attended a secretarial course, then the Royal Adelaide Hospital where she nursed. After joining the RAAF, she moved to Melbourne where she nursed at the Heidelberg Hospital.
In June 1947 she travelled to Japan to join the occupational forces where she met Maxwell Osmon Carr. They married in 1949. Married life meant many moves - Pearce, Point Cook, Elizabeth, Ipswich and whilst Max was stationed in Woomera, the family lived in East Malvern.
Upon retirement the family moved to Perth.
The couple had three children.
