SOUTH AUSTRALIAN CASUALTIES.
THE MEN LOST AT REITFONTEIN.
Sergt. C. E. McCabe, who was killed in the action at Reitfontein on November 29, was a member of A squadron, and by good judges who saw him under fire he was accounted one of the best sergeants in the regiment, one who always handled his men with cool judgment. On several occasions those under him had to thank him for their safety, and his bravery was never more apparent than one day when he was sent with a section to search a farmhouse in the Orange River Colony. On approaching the house a number of Boers opened fire, and the Imperial officer who had charge of the little party was disabled. For some time McCabe and his men were in a hot corner, but, carefully fighting his way and picking his ground, the sergeant got his section safely back to camp without a single casualty. Sgt. McCabe, who was 27 years of age, has left a widow, but no family. He was a fireman at the metropolitan station for some years, and was a prime favourite with the superintendent and all the men.
