Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

John was the youngest of six children of Thomas Brown (b1833 in Wales) and Bridget Rock (b1843 in Lancashire, England). Thomas (a Miner) and Bridget (a Domestic Servant) married in 1862 in Gwalia, WA - shortly after Bridget had arrived in Fremantle with her sister on board the Mary Harrison. Thomas and Bridget settled in Gwalia where Thomas was a Miner. Following Thomas' death, Brdget and the children moved to Northampton WA.

John was working as a Miner in Gwalia WA in November 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF. He served (Private; Service No:6289) with 27th Infantry Battalion and was Discharged in October 1917. John gave his eldest sister - Isabella Elizabeth Shires (nee Brown) as his NoK.

John settled in Fremantle following his Discharge, and was working as a Labourer in 1939 when he married Ethel Graham Hicks (nee Stevenson; b1893 in Launceston, Tasmania). John died in 1947 and Ethel in 1970.
