Biography contributed by St Ignatius' College

Angus Robert Burley was born on November 14, 1892, in Port Augusta, South Australia. He was raised in Houghton and later Kapunda, South Australia and dedicated his life to farming before and after his military service. He was 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 166 lbs, light-coloured hair, and greyish-blue eyes. A notable distinguishing feature was a scar on his stomach.

On December 1, 1914, Angus enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) at Oaklands Park, South Australia, as Private 707 in the 9th Light Horse Regiment. Following training in Melbourne from October 1914 to February 1915, he embarked aboard HMAT Surada (A52) from Melbourne on February 6, 1915. During World War I, he fought in major campaigns like Gallipoli, Sinai, and Palestine, including battles at Jerusalem, Megiddo, El Mughar, Rumani, and Egypt.

Angus Robert Burley served in several critical campaigns during the First World War. He first fought in Gallipoli from April 25, 1915, to January 8, 1916, where the Light Horse served as dismounted infantry. After Gallipoli, they joined the Sinai and Palestine Campaign, seeing action in key locations like Jerusalem, Megiddo, and Egypt.

Although he did not sustain any major wounds or injuries, he suffered from influenza and diarrhoea, which required multiple hospitalizations in Egypt and Palestine.

During his time in service, he participated in a football match in Cairo and trained in Melbourne before embarkation, where he honed his skills and prepared further for his challenges.

After returning to Australia, Angus settled in South Australia and resumed working as a farmer. He lived in the Minalton on the Yorke Peninsula for a time after the war. He was married to Ellenora Alice Ruby Simes on 29th September 1927 at Henley Beach.

He was laid to rest at Centennial Park Cemetery in South Australia. He passed away on April 29, 1968, at the age of 75 at the Repatriation Hospital in Daw Park, South Australia. He was buried at Centennial Park Cemetery and is commemorated at the Houghton War Memorial.
