He was very keen when taking out wiring parties and patrols into 'No Man's Land' . He was conspicuous in the raid on enemy trenches on 12 and 13 June 1916 at Pozieres where despite being wounded, he stayed with the platoon until the Battalion was relieved when he was evacuated to hospital London Gazette on 4 January 1917, page 254, position 138 Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 29 June 1917, page 1392, position 71
