Alexander Carmichael was born in Bute Scotland around 1876 and had a brother by the name of James Duncan Carmichael, who lived on 29th Cartha Street Langside. Alexander Carmichael was 38 when he went to war. James Duncan Carmichael was the next of kin when Alexander Carmichael died.
 
Carmichael started as a Private then was promoted to Acting Corporal 7th April 1918, who looked after a group of 14-15 soldiers. The Corporal would look after them by making sure they are in the correct uniform, individual training, and personal appearance. He was further promoted to 2nd Corporal 9th March 1919 while still stationed in Egypt after the war had ended.
 
Alexander Carmichael was 5 foot 9 inches, he had hazel eyes, brown hair and was a part of the Presbyterian religion. His address was Wiltunga, Roleside Street, Parkside, South Australia. Outside of participating in the Australian Army he was a commercial traveller.
 
Alexander Carmichael enlisted in the war for World War 1 on the 1st of September 1915 and the unit’s name that he was a part of was the 10th battalion from the 14th reinforcement.
 
Alexander Carmichael was in the Anzac Provost Corps this was an Anzac Police Force that was formed in Egypt in 1916. The Anzac Provost Corps or the Anzac Police Force dealt with battlefield traffic control, security duties, prisoner of war handling, the investigation of service offences, maintaining discipline and the running of military prisons. Carmichael's service record reveals that he spent most of his service at the Australian Base Depots in Egylpt particularly Abbassia and Moascar and remained there after the war ended
 
Alexander Carmichael received no injuries from the war. When Alexander Carmichael returned to Australia 18th May 1920, he was relieved of his war duties and was free to live his life again. Little is known about what he did after his service, his service record reveals that a Miss Thompson of Randwick, NSW enquired whether Carmichael had returned to Australia and was informed that he had. Carmichael moved to the USA at some point as his Service Record include documents that issued his war medals to San Francisco, California.
