Henry Cornelius was the youngest of thirteen children, not all of whom lived to adulthood. When he enlsited in Roma, Queensland, he was single 5' 11" (180cm) tall and weighed 154lbs (70kg) and had a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair.

Henry was appointed a driver on 11 April 1917 and was allotted to 2nd Signal Squadron. He suffered bouts of malaria while on service, a common experience among soldiers in the Middle East. In his later years he resided at Myrtlebank. He died in 1961 the same year as his brother Wilfred, who was two years older and is also represented on the Willunga Cheer-up Society Collage.
