Corporal to Private
In Aug/Sep 1968 I contracted an unknown infection & was hospitalised in Vung Tau for approximately 2 weeks & upon release I was sent back to 1 ARU. The OC had changed as had the atmosphere within the unit so as 3 RAR was due to RTA at approximately the same time as me I applied for a transfer to that unit. My request was rejected as they were not accepting NCOs at this late part of their tour so I applied for a reduction in rank; (As a regular soldier I soon realised that it was a big mistake on my part & it took 18 months back in Australia to regain the rank of Corporal again) I marched in to C Coy Third Battalion as a Private soldier on 17 Sep 1968 & immediately fitted in in as many of the Company had passed through 1 ARU during my time there.
