Citation for Military Medal
Pe. R. W. Payne: When, on patrol with Bravo Company,3RAR, Pte. Payne's platoon came under heavy and acciurate fire from an enemy bunker system. Two members of his section were wounded in the
initial action. Without hesitation, and with complete disregard for his safety, Pte. Payne moved forward under heavy enemy fire to assist one of the casualties who had been shot in the throat and was entangled in vines.
He administered first aid but further heavy enemy fire resulted in him being ordered back to his section area. Pte. Payne withdrew, but rushed forward again under heavy fire and with the aid of another soldier dragged the wounded soldier back to the platoon perimeter.
