Son of Joachim Vandenberg and Melenea Amelia Vandenberg of George Street, Singleton, NSW and Granya, Victoria. Joachim served in the 4hTH Battalion enlisting on 21 January 1916 and returned on 27 October 1917.

Brother of Alfred Ernest Vandenberg who returned to Australia on 20 May 1919 having served with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade and Goulburn Henry Vandenberg who was discharged at Rabaul on 21 October 1919. 

Commenced return to Australia on 5 September 1919 aboard HT Plassy disembarking on 20 October 1919.
