Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 17th May 1917, Private Matthew Thompson, referred to as Mat, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1897A), labourer from 20 Little Gipp Street, Carrington, New South Wales, was possibly Killed in Action by enemy artillery fire at Le Touquet Sector, Northern France, age 22 years 6 months.

No Roll of Honour circular submitted.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 14th November 1894 to William (died 18.11.1935, Wickham, N.S.W., age 80), from 20 Little Gipp Street, Carrington, New South Wales and Bellbird, N.S.W. (1919) and 32 Little Gipp Street, Carrington, N.S.W., and Margaret Thompson (died 23.3.1926, Wickham, N.S.W., age 71), from Bellbird, N.S.W. (1919) and 20 Little Gipp Street, Carrington, New South Wales, Mat enlisted on the 20th April 1916, Reg No-1897, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Port Sydney on the 4th September 1916.

Re-allotted Reg No-1897A on the 26.2.1917.

Mr. Thompson is resting at Tancrez Farm Cemetery, Belgium. Plot II Row H Grave 6.

Place of Association – Carrington, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Mat’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates and the Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor.

Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription at the Thompson gravesite to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of Mat’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 2-118. 21.
