Lieutenant Colin Falconer Sturm enlisted in the RANVR as an Ordinary Seaman on 27 January 1942 and was attached to Port Division Port Adelaide prior to promotion to Midshipman on HMAS Rushcutter on 8 September 1942. He was subsequently commissioned as Sub Lieutenant and Lieutenant (HMAS Rushcutter) and was attached to Motor Launch Base Moreton when he was discharged on 5 March 1946. Lieutenant Sturm continued serving in the RANVR post-war and his resignation was accepted in Adelaide on 7 May 1951.

Colin was born in 1922 in Perth WA, the only child of Edward William Sturm (b1891 in Hastings, New Zealand) and Kate (Ketty) Falconer (b1896 in Perth, WA). Edward - a Telegraphist - served in WWI with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces (Sapper; Service No:4/2035) in Egypt. Edward and Ketty married in 1919 in Melbourne, Victoria and lived in Perth, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide where Edward was a Business Manager. Edward also served with the RANVER (NAP) as a Lieutenant in WWII.

In 1944 in Sydney NSW, Colin married Dorothy (Pixie) Madoline Job (b1923 in Adelaide, SA) - Pixie was a Signaller in the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS). Following his Discharge in 1946 Colin and Pixie settled in the Adelaide Hills, SA where Colin continued to serve with the RANVR until 1951. Colin, a Manager, and Pixie were living in Melbourne, Victoria when Colin died in 1987. Pixie returned to South Australia where she died in 1997,
