Henry or ‘Harry’ Estoppey left Australia during June 1916 and arrived in France during November 1916. He was only in France for one month when he fell sick on Christmas Day 1916. He was treated for bronchitis and sent to the 2nd Australian General Hospital in Boulogne, but died of pneumonia.
His mother was Caroline Ellen Estoppey and his father was reported to have been in an asylum. His mother had another son from a previous relationship, 2619A Cpl. John Rule Chilton 7th Battalion AIF, who had already died at Pozieres during 1916, aged 25.
Henry’s other brother 55137 Pte Frederick Montague Estoppey 8th Battalion AIF, returned to Australia in 1919.
