Naming Albert

Albert Lance Pollard was born in May, 1918, and was named after two of his Uncles who were then fighting on the Western Front in France -- Albert William Colley Pollard, his father's brother, and Lance John Edwards, his mother's brother. Both of his uncles survived the First World War and returned home to meet their nephew named in their honour.

Biography

Albert was the eldest of two sons. He was born in Port Pirie on 1st May 1918 to Clarence and Laurel Pollard. Albert signed up with the Naval Reserves at Birkenhead in South Australia during 1936, and was called up in the following years to serve in World War 2. He commenced his service on the Australian Destroyer "Quickmatch". He served on this ship until March 1943, when he joined the heavy cruiser HMAS "Shropshire"
