World War II Service
Louis enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve on 16 September 1940 at Port Adelaide, aged just 18. He was allocated service number PA1851 and initially served as an Ordinary Seaman (C.D.) W/T before rising to Able Seaman.
His postings included:
HMAS Torrens (Depot) – shore establishment
HMAS Encounter (Shore) – Adelaide naval base
HMAS Derwent, HMAS Huon, and HMAS Basilisk – shore and depot postings
Brief sea service aboard HMAS Bombo (3 October – 29 November 1942)
Louis served primarily in communications and shore-based naval operations, ensuring the smooth running of naval administration and operational support. His efficiency and conduct were consistently rated “Very Good”.
He remained in service until after the war, being demobilised on 7 March 1946
after more than five years of active duty.
