Able Seaman Bernard Irvin (Service No:PA1784) enlisted as an Ordinary Seaman in the RAN on 22 April 1940 and was attached to HMAS Canberra when he was promoted to Able Seaman on 6 April 1941. His service included HMAS Cerberus, Rushcutter; Leeuwin and Bungaree and Able Seaman Irvin was attached to HMAS Torrens at Discharge on 30 October 1945.

The eldest of five children, Bernard was born in Adelaide South Australia in 1920 to Ernest Irvin (b1881 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Mary Veronica Malone (b1891 in Ireland). Ernest was a Labourer at Mt Barker, SA before serving with the AIF (Service No:3851) in WWI. He and Mary married in Adelaide in 1918, where they settled and raised their family and Ernest worked as a Boilermaker's Assistant.

Following his Discharge, Bernard married Joyce Elizabeth Jane Sutherland (b1923 in Camperdown, Victoria) - Joyce had served with the ACMF in WWII. Bernard and Joyce settled in Geelong, Victoria where Bernard worked as a Fitter until his death in 1964. Joyce died in 2004.
