In Adelaide on the 6th June 1942, S57612 PTE Dudley Bruce Edwards was just over 18 years of age when he enlisted in the Australian Army. He was discharged from 4 Garrison Battalion on 28 February 1943 to enable him to join the Royal Australian Navy. On 16 March 1943 PA/3674 Able Seaman Dudley Bruce Edwards joined the Royal Australian Navy and after his initial naval training at HMAS Cerberus, he was posted as a gunner onboard HMAS AUSTRALIA where he served in a number of WW II conflicts throughout the Pacific Ocean regions to the north east of Australia.

Young Dudley was part of the ships company in all the following actions: Cape Gloucester, Aitape, Morotai, Lingayen, Hollandia, Wakor, Biak, Noemfoor, Arawe & Leyte. He experienced the Japanese kamikaze attacks on HMAS AUSTRALIA during the final stages of WWII.

Just prior to the end of the war, Dudley was part of the crew that sailed HMAS AUSTRALIA to England for repairs. Then, when the war ended and on his return to Australia; on 20 March 1946 he was discharged in Adelaide at HMAS Torrens.

In appreciation for rescuing Dutch nationals from the Japanese advancement through PNG, the Dutch Government also wished to decorate the crew of HMAS AUSTRALIA but this award was declined by the Australian Government at the time. However, some 65 years later the crew of HMAS AUSTRALIA were awarded the War Commemorative Cross by the Dutch Government and this medal was presented to Dudley mid October 2006, 2 months before his death.
