Son of Mr and Mrs James William BARR of Main Road, Solomontown, SA
Educated at Ethelton Public and Port Adelaide LeFevre Technical Schools he was fond of football and joined the Navy in March 1940. He saw action on the HMAS 'Playtpus'. His grandfather joined the Navy in 1883 and went to China in the 'Protector' to quell the Boxer Rebellion.
