William Durrock Campbell was born on the 14th of March 1880, in Glanville, Port Adelaide. When he was 14, he joined the Merchant Navy as a stroker, claiming to be 18. In 1904, he married Elizabeth Holmes, and they had 5 children. Sadly, one of his sons, Ronald, passed away after only 4 months. He then worked as a cook until he enlisted into the war on the 1st of September 1915.
He attended training at Morphettville and then on the 13/10th 1915, he transferred to Mitcham. On the 26.2.16, he was sent to the 50th battalion and then promoted on the 27th of the next month. He wounded his thigh and hip in action in France on the 16/8/1916. William was then transferred to the 70th battalion and then the 40th where he was appointed as a driver on the 27/6/17. On the 7/11/18, he went on leave for 2 weeks, returning on the 21st of that month. He continued to be a driver for the remainder of the war. He survived the entire war, making it onto the nominal roll and embarking on a ship at the end to travel back to Australia from England, returning to his wife and four children.
He then lived out his life in Berri as a ranger, reporting the goings on of the land there and controlling stock and vegetation. He was a pigeon racer in his spare time and was present at many poultry shows. He died in Port Lincoln in 1967, and 7 years later his wife followed.
