IN GOD'S CARE

Rodger Peryman Wishart was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and moved with his parents to Bendigo when he was aged 7. He attended Bendigo High School and Essendon High School and later was employed by E.A. Machin Pty. Ltd. R.P. Wishart enlisted in the RAAF on 10 November 1940, on his 20th birthday, and the following month he left for Canada to train as a wireless air-gunner. On completion of the course he received his commission and proceeded to England. He was appointed gunnery leader to the first Australian Wellington squadron, which later converted to Halifaxes, and occupied that position until December, 1943, when he transferred to Lancaster Squadron 97.

Flight-Lieutenant Wishart took part in a number of raids over Germany, one in May 1943, was a raid on Duisburg, the biggest inland port in Germany, which was the heaviest raid of the war. Flt-Lt Wishart was also one of a number of Australians who participated in the raid against Hamburg in July 1943 and other raids on Germany and Italy in August of the same year.
In April 1944 his parents were advised that he had been posted as missing from an operational flight over Berlin which had taken place at the end of January. In August 1944 his parents were officially notified of his death, which occurred on the night of 30th January 1944, and his burial in the Barsingerhorn (Kolhorn) General Cemetery, Netherlands.
