Eldest of three brothers who served in WWII, Flying Officer John Augustine O'Connor (Service No:25575) enlisted in the RAAF on 17 April 1941 at RAAF HQ Darwin as an Aircraftman I - Meteorological Duties - and was appointed Warrant Officer that month. Flying Officer O'Connor served at RAAF Base Pearce and 76 Operational Base Unit (OBU), and was attached to 77 OBU at Termination of Appointment on 28 March 1946.
John was born in Narrogin, Western Australia in 1909, eldest of seven children of Francis Daniel O'Connor (b1881 at Port Wakefield, South Australia) and Agnes Anastasia Roddan (b1882 in Lismore, New South Wales). Francis (a Blacksmith in Narrogin) and Agnes married in Northam in 1908, and lived in Narrogin, Merredin, Yilgarn and Beverley before settling in Perth in the late 1930s - Francis was a Blacksmith.
John joined the Commonwealth Public Service - initially with the Postmaster Generals Department in 1925 as a Telegraphist, and worked in Beverley, Busselton, Narrogin and Narambeen as a Postal Official (Telegraphist, Clerk and A/Postmaster). In 1940 John was a Weather Observer with the Department of the Interior in Darwn, NT when he enlisted in the RAAF. Following his Discharge, John settled in Perth and was again a Public Servant (Weather Observer) when in 1952 he married Lillian Hilda Inman Davies (nee Barlow; b1908 in Fremantle, Western Australia). John and Lillian lived in Perth and Darwin - John was a Weather Observer and Lillian a Ledgerkeeper with the Meteorological Office. John died in Tasmania in 1961. Lillian remarried and died in 1992.
