Fireman & Weightlifter
Eric Magor, was a fireman first at the Adelaide MFS and did a lot of weight lifting there. He held most Australasian weightlifting championships and had several world records to his credit and was described as ‘the strongest man in Australia and one of the most powerful in the world.
He joined the RAAF and was commissioned as a pilot officer. Apparently, all full-time members of the brigade were exempt from conscription. If they volunteered without permission they would have to resign. Permission would be granted only to men who wanted to join combatant units and they would be re-employed after the war without loss of benefits. The brigade was unusual in that it was the only one in Australia to permit its men to join the forces.
