Mervyn Lloyd Coles was the son of Andrew Coles and Emily Matilda (née Pearce). He passed his Leaving Certificate and was awarded a scholarship at Sydney Teachers College.

His first teaching post was in his hometown of Broken Hill and then onto the tin mining town of Tallebung from where he enlisted in the RAAF.

At 23 Squadron (RAAF) Lloyd was the leading wireless operator in Squadron Leader Ray Cupper's B24 Liberator crew. Additionally as Lloyd was a teacher he was appointed as 23 Squadron's Education Officer.
