AUSTRALIAN AIRMEN HELP R.A.N. GUARD THE SEAS
An Australian Wellington crew serving with an R.A.F. Squadron on sea patrol and convoy escort work over the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oma, and Arabian Sea helped an escort vessel of the Royal Australian Navy to give protection to a southbound convoy.
The Crew, who have been flying together as a team for the last year, included Flying Officer P.W. Adcock, of Erindale, South Australia, Warrant Officer M. Ison of Sydney, and Flight Sergeant W.C. Huggonson of Murgon, Queensland.
Many other Australians are serving with this squadron protecting the sea routes for Allied shipping. Many of them have previously served in the Western Desert. When the A.I.F. Ninth division left the Middle East for the Pacific war theatre, Australian members of the squadron played their part in providing a safe escort through their area.
In recent times the percentage of Australians on the squadrons strength has greatly increased. The navigation officer is an Australian, Flying Officer C Swire of Mosman Sydney, and his assistant is Flying Officer S. Davies of Granville New South Wales. One of the Australian crews is captained by Flying Officer N.K. Scott of Annerley Brisbane.
A newcomer to the squadron is Flight Sergeant M.J. “Mick” Hughson, former Fitzroy champion centre man, brother of the present captain, Fred Hughson.
