Robert Joseph Acres was born in Angaston, South Australia on 26 May 1921 to Francis Joseph Acres and Nellie Sylvia nee Murray

He moved to Western Australia with his family as a small boy.

He was previously enlisted with the 11 Battalion by was discharged on medical grounds. He obtained the rank of Corporal. He left 1 July 1941

He attended St Patricks'Boys School from 1932-1935. 'He studied a night at the Senior Technical School in English and Applied Maths.

He obtained his Junior Certificate from University of WA in 1935. He passed English, Maths B, History, Drawing, Geography, Physiology and Agriculture Science. Did not pass Maths A.

From 1938 to 1942 he worked for the Department of Mining and Crown Law Department as a clerk.   He left to join RAAF, having recovered his health.

He was a keen cricketer and captain of a cricket team  His won trophies for his batting average.  He also played football.
