A forgotten WWI serviceman?
Last year, whilst wandering through a country cemetery, I came across the grave of a serviceman who served during The Great War. Unlike other official war graves this one was marked by a simple wooden cross, and as such piqued my interest.
95 years ago, in 1925, Driver/Gunner Donald Francis Stuart MM, (Service number 2899), late 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, labourer of Buffalo, South Gippsland, Victoria (and Wonthaggi) was buried at Wonthaggi Cemetery aged 38 years.
Born in Paisley, Scotland in about 1886, the son of Mary (nee Leslie) and James Stuart. He was an early enlistee, joining the AIF on the 26 August 1914. Over the subsequent years of the war, he saw service in Egypt and France, returning to Australia on 8 October 1918.
He was awarded the Military Medal on the 19 October 1917. During his service he was gassed in 1917 and was 'sligh[tly]' shot in the knee and face.
I'm not sure if he is on any local honour rolls.
