Barry as he came to be known, was born on the Second of September, 1924 and grew up in LeCornu Street in Broadview, South Australia. He attended St Monica's Parish School, Walkerville and Rostrevor College, Woodforde. He was a talented Footballer (Australian Rules) and Cricketer representing the College in the First XVIII and First XI respectively.
Barry worked for a short time in the Taxation Department before enlisting in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). During the Second World War, he saw service in the European Theatre which included campaigns in Europe.
After the War, Barry studied Law and married Margaret Wellington. They had six children, John, Michael, Christine, David, Stephen and Philip.
