John was born in Townsville on 24 Apr 1890, son of John William Land and Henrietta Ann Dower.
2nd Lieutenant Land enlisted in Brisbane on 18 Dec 1914, and embarked from Brisbane per HMAT A1 “Hymettus” on 17 Sep 1915.
He served in Egypt with the 5th Light Horse Regiment.
He returned to Australia 22 Nov 1919, and was discharged 26 Feb 1920.
He was a locomotive driver with the railways.
