Robert (Bob) Ellis was born in 1914 in the former suburb of Vermont, South Australia (now Plympton) to John Ellis and Mabel (nee Towers). At some stage he went to live in Western Australia in the Pemberton area. In February 1939 Bob received his appointment to the RAAF, and left Pemberton on 28 February to take up duties at Laverton, Victoria, starting in early March.
On 31 May 1941, having returned to Pemberton, Bob was presented with a pen as he was about to depart for overseas with the RAAF, having served for some time in the Commonwealth. Bob was wished a safe return and must have returned to Australia as his date of enlistment is given as 14 July 1942 in Perth. Bob served with the Royal Air Force from 3 July 1943 until his death as a result of an aircraft accident in bad weather whilst on an armed reconnaissance mission, Jesi, Italy, 14 December 1944.
