Son of Cpl L.K. Roberts of Salisbury, Charles was fond of sport and played football and was also a keen soccer player. In civil life he worked at tomato growing for several years on his father's property at Waterloo Corner, and then went to a Munitions Factory for 12 months where from he received his callup from the R.A.AF. He trained at Victor Harbor and Ballarat.
