Robert Douglas Hughes
Doug became a pilot in the RAAF. After training one of his first missions as an air crew member was flying over Germany when his plane was shot down. He evaded capture originally by hiding in a tree. However in 1944 he was captured by the Germans and placed in a POW camp in a couple of various stalags. He was released in 1945 when the camp was liberated by the Americans.
Please check the Australian War memorial site for 4 audio files of Doug talking about his experience during WWII and his time in the camps and after being liberated.
