Kadina & Wallaroo Times 10th July 1942
The tragedy of the war tore into our community when word was received that our well known airman Douglas Bussenschutt had been killed and from what I could understand made its deep impression upon readers throughout the district. And again the sorrow came as with a double meaning for his young wife was a Kadina girl namely Miss Roma Gillett and thus no doubt drew out without any restraint our deepest sympathy. The Bussenschutt family are well known in and about the district and although I did not know Douglas too well yet I have seen him now and again in our midst. It is one of the sad yet unexplainable events that happen. Talking this week to a close friend he asked me the very same question - why? I thought the tribute shown by the people at the funeral ws most marked and truly the stamp of the sympathy the people are noted for in times of sorrow. The tribute paid to his young and useful and upright life must have been comforting to the relatives in their sorrow. I also in this paragraph offer to the young bereaved wife and the parents my own heartfelt sympathy in the trying hour. "Some day, we will understand"
