Son of Mr and Mrs W. MITCHELL of 130 Frederick Street, Welland South, SA.  Educated at Welland Public and Woodville High School where he gained Leaving Honors, Ronald played football and cricket and was captain of Woodville High School Rifle Club.  He also was fond of mechanics, wireless and motors.  In civilian life Ronald worked on the staff of Holden's Motor Works, Woodville and left in May 1941 to join the RAAF.
