Warrant Officer Gordon George Simons was the son of Thomas Edward Simons and Amelia Isobel Mowatt (nee Hammond), of Coombe road, Allenby Gardens, South Australia. He enlisted on 6 August 1940, initially undertaking a course at Somers, Victoria. Whilst in Victoria, he married Margaret Gair on 9 August 1941 and a few weeks later embarked for Rhodesia where he completed his training as a pilot. He was then sent to the Middle East in June 1943 where he was attached to a night torpedo bomber squadron. At the time of his death on 14 December 1944 he was captain of a Wellington bomber. He was educated at Welland Public and Woodville High Schools, and at the time of enlistment was on the staff of W. H. Burford & Son. Ltd, Hindmarsh.
