Sergeant Kelvin Arthur Bates 416240 of Number 3 Bomb Aiming and Gunnery School at West Sale aerodrome was killed in the loss of Hawker Demon aircraft A1-27 at the Dutson bombing range near Sale in Victoria

 

The other crewman, Leading Aircraftman Allan Frank Hehir 415423, was seriously injured with a probable fractured skull.  He was discharged in October 1945 with the rank of Warrant Officer, having been involved in at least one other aircraft incident.

 

 

Kelvin Bates was the son of Arthur William and Ruby Charlotte Bates of Wilkawatt, South Australia
