PATRIOTISM IS THE GLORY OF MAKING YOUR COUNTRY HAPPIER

On the afternoon of May 21, 1942, Sergeant Rambler Roberts was the pilot in training aboard a Vickers Wellington Mk 1C, serial number DV841. Their flight took them from Finningley to the Isle of Man, returning via York. As the aircraft passed over West Roddy Moor, witnesses on the ground reported that one engine was on fire. At about 5:55 pm, the aircraft swerved to avoid hitting nearby houses, and crashed into the Emma Pits Road, near Crook. The aircraft exploded on impact and all aboard were killed. The crew consisted of Sgt Rambler David Roberts, RAAF, pilot; Sgt Rae Groom, RAAF, second pilot; Flt Sgt William Neil Reeves, RCAF, air observer; Flt Sgt Robert Melbourne Boates, RCAF, air gunner; and Flt Sgt Angus Frederick Roberts, RCAF, air gunner.
