Alan Tonkin was one of the Country Vice Presidents on the State Board of the RSL South Australian Branch.  he died suddenly on his way home to Barmera after attending a meeting of the State Board.  Alan had been a stalwart in the interests of ex-servicemen - especially the soldier settlers and form 1942 to 1947 he was outstanding on the State Board as a respresntative of the interests of the country members.  He attended the 1945 Frederal Congress in Perth, also in Melbourne in November 1946 and the special meeting in Melbourne in February 1947. he was a fluent and keen in detate  and his outstanding ability and personality promopted the State Board to nominate him as second delegate to the Federal President Eric Millhouse to attend the British Empire Service League Conference London in July 1947.
