Arthur James Foote was born on 15 October 1915 to William Buchanan Foote and Fanny (nee Powers). He attended Saint Peters College, Adelaide, between 1926 and 1931 and sat for his Intermediate exam in 1931, passing in 3 subjects. He then went to work for Harrison Ramsay Pty Ltd, Adelaide, as a clerk and later as salesman and tea tester.
Prior to enlisting he incurred a number of traffic offences for speeding as well as being fined for smoking in a public place of entertainment. In September 1940 he attended his sister’s wedding in Melbourne.
Arthur enlisted on 9 November 1940 in Adelaide, and embarked from Sydney for the United Kingdom on 17 July 1941, arriving there on 2 September 1941. On 10 February 1942, Arthur was killed in an aircraft accident in a Wellington X9905 at Leytonstone, Essex, England.
Prior to enlistment, Arthur had been an active member of the Pirie Branch of the Spencer Gulf Aero Club. At their annual meeting in December 1942, it was stated that 52 members were on active service, 46 being with the RAAF, and 4 members had paid the supreme sacrifice.
